Connecting a Barcode Scanner to IZI
Connecting a Barcode Scanner to IZI
Section titled “Connecting a Barcode Scanner to IZI”A barcode scanner is used at the register to quickly add bar items or scan loyalty cards without manual input. Most USB scanners connect like a regular keyboard — no drivers or special configuration.
What You’ll Need
Section titled “What You’ll Need”- A barcode scanner with USB HID interface (keyboard emulation) — one option; Serial scanners also work but require more configuration
- A cash register station running Windows
- Items or cards with barcodes printed on them, set up in the IZI catalog
Step 1. Connect the Scanner
Section titled “Step 1. Connect the Scanner”Connect the scanner to a USB port on the cash register station. Windows will recognize it as a “USB HID Keyboard Device” — no separate driver required.
Verify the scanner works: open Notepad and scan a barcode from a product package — a string of digits and characters should appear.
Step 2. Check the Scanner’s Input Mode
Section titled “Step 2. Check the Scanner’s Input Mode”Most USB HID scanners operate in “keyboard emulation” mode: after scanning a barcode, they append Enter at the end of the line. This is the standard mode that IZI supports.
If the scanner doesn’t add Enter — find the “Add CR” or “Suffix: CR/LF” configuration barcode in the model’s documentation and scan it to enable.
Step 3. Configure in IZI (If Required)
Section titled “Step 3. Configure in IZI (If Required)”For most USB HID scanners no additional IZI settings are required — they work as keyboard input. The item search field in the CRM accepts scanner input directly.
If your IZI configuration has an explicit scanner settings section (Settings → Hardware → Scanner) — specify:
- Connection type: USB HID
- Line terminator: CR (Carriage Return)
Step 4. Test Scanning in IZI
Section titled “Step 4. Test Scanning in IZI”- Open the Bar or Register section in the CRM.
- Click on the item search field.
- Scan the barcode from a product package that is in the catalog.
- The item should be added to the order automatically.
If the item is not found — ensure it has been added to the IZI catalog with the correct barcode.
Configuring a Serial Scanner (COM Port)
Section titled “Configuring a Serial Scanner (COM Port)”If your scanner uses a Serial interface (COM port or USB-to-Serial adapter):
- Determine the COM port number: Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT).
- In IZI settings, specify connection type “Serial,” port number, and baud rate (usually 9600 — check the scanner’s documentation).
- Test as in Step 4.
Serial scanners are found on older equipment. When buying new — choose USB HID: easier to configure.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Scanner doesn’t respond | Cable not connected or faulty | Check USB, try a different port |
| Code scans but item not found | Item not set up or different barcode | Check IZI catalog, add barcode to item |
| Digits entered but no Enter | No Enter after code | Enable CR suffix in scanner settings |
| Scanner works in Notepad, not in IZI | No focus on input field | Click on the CRM search field before scanning |

Section titled “See Also”Frequently asked questions
Does a barcode scanner need a special driver?
For most USB HID scanners — no. They are recognized by Windows as a keyboard and work immediately without installing a driver. If the scanner uses Serial (COM port) — port configuration will be required.
The scanner works in other programs but not in IZI — why?
Most likely the input focus is not on the item search field in the CRM. Click on the input field with your mouse, then scan. If the scanned code is not recognized — verify that the item with this barcode is set up in the IZI catalog.
What barcode types does IZI support?
IZI works with standard linear barcodes (EAN-13, EAN-8, Code128, QR code, and others). The specific set of supported formats depends on the version — check the IZI documentation.
Can a phone camera be used instead of a scanner?
Technically yes — the IZI mobile app or mobile browser interface supports camera scanning. For a fixed cash register, a USB scanner is more convenient: faster, doesn't depend on phone battery, hands are free.
