UAE Tax Compliance for Gaming Clubs
UAE Tax Compliance for Gaming Clubs
Section titled “UAE Tax Compliance for Gaming Clubs”Gaming clubs in the UAE face two main taxes: VAT at 5% and Corporate Tax at 9% (introduced June 2023). Both have revenue thresholds below which they do not apply — but the registration obligations and penalties are strict enough that you want to understand the rules before you cross those thresholds. IZI handles VAT on every receipt automatically once you enter your Tax Registration Number; the quarterly filing still goes through the EmaraTax portal.
Disclaimer: this page is a general overview. UAE tax law has changed several times in recent years. For decisions that affect your business, consult a licensed UAE tax advisor.
VAT (Value Added Tax)
Section titled “VAT (Value Added Tax)”Registration thresholds
Section titled “Registration thresholds”| 12-month taxable turnover | Action required |
|---|---|
| Below 187,500 AED | Registration not permitted |
| 187,500 – 375,000 AED | Voluntary registration available |
| Above 375,000 AED | Mandatory registration |
Once registered, your club receives a TRN (Tax Registration Number), adds 5% VAT to all taxable sales, and files a VAT Return with the FTA every quarter.
What is taxable in a gaming club
Section titled “What is taxable in a gaming club”Standard rate (5%) applies to:
- Gaming time (PC seats, PlayStation, console stations)
- Bar and food & beverage sales
- Multipass subscriptions and prepaid bundles
- Tournament room rental
- Ancillary rentals (headsets, controllers, peripherals)
Zero-rating or exemption rarely applies to typical gaming club services. If you operate in a free zone, verify your specific activity classification with the FTA before assuming an exemption.
Configuring IZI for VAT
Section titled “Configuring IZI for VAT”Navigate to Settings → Finance → Taxes in IZI and enter:
- Your club’s TRN
- VAT rate: 5%
- VAT registration date
After saving:
- Every receipt automatically shows a VAT breakdown (taxable amount + VAT amount + total)
- A VAT period report is available under Analytics → Finance → Tax Report
- Reports export in formats compatible with standard accounting software
IZI calculates VAT at the point of sale, which aligns with the FTA’s tax-point rule for gaming time. For prepaid balance top-ups, IZI records the VAT event at payment receipt — the earlier of the two trigger points under UAE VAT law.
Filing the VAT Return
Section titled “Filing the VAT Return”VAT Returns are filed quarterly through the EmaraTax portal (formerly FTA e-Services). The deadline is 28 days after the quarter ends.
The IZI tax report breaks your period down into:
| Line | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Output tax | VAT collected from customers |
| Input tax | VAT you paid to suppliers |
| Net VAT due | Output tax minus input tax |
Transfer these figures to the EmaraTax return form. Keep the IZI export as your supporting documentation for any FTA audit.
Corporate Tax
Section titled “Corporate Tax”Effective 1 June 2023, UAE Corporate Tax applies to all legal entities conducting business in the UAE, including mainland companies and most free zone entities.
| Annual taxable profit | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 375,000 AED | 0% |
| Above 375,000 AED | 9% |
Free zone considerations
Section titled “Free zone considerations”A Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) may retain the 0% rate, but only on qualifying income — broadly, income from transactions with other free zone companies or from business conducted outside the UAE. Revenue from serving UAE residents (your typical walk-in gaming customer) generally does not constitute qualifying income. If your club is in a free zone and serves the local public, assume the standard rates apply unless a licensed advisor confirms otherwise.
Registration deadline
Section titled “Registration deadline”Register for Corporate Tax through EmaraTax within 3 months of the start of your first tax period. For companies incorporated before June 2023, the first period began on 1 June 2023. For companies formed after that date, it begins from your incorporation date.
Day-to-day tax operations in IZI
Section titled “Day-to-day tax operations in IZI”Balance top-up. When a customer tops up their prepaid balance, IZI records a VAT event immediately (payment received = tax point). The VAT appears in the output tax total for that period even if the gaming time is consumed in a later quarter.
Shift close. At shift end, IZI produces a summary report breaking down total revenue by payment type, with the VAT component separated. Admins do not calculate tax manually.
Tax Invoice for corporate clients. When a business client requests a Tax Invoice, generate it in IZI with your club’s TRN. If the client provides their own TRN, include it on the document — this allows them to recover input VAT.
Quarterly reconciliation. Export the IZI tax report for the quarter, reconcile output and input VAT, and file through EmaraTax before the 28-day deadline.
FTA penalties
Section titled “FTA penalties”| Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Late VAT registration | 20,000 AED |
| Late VAT Return (first offence) | 1,000 AED |
| Late VAT Return (repeat offence) | 2,000 AED |
| Error in tax declaration | 50% of unpaid tax |
Register before you cross the mandatory threshold — a single late-registration penalty can exceed several months of tax liability for a small club.

Do I need to register for VAT if my club earns less than 375,000 AED per year?
Mandatory VAT registration applies when your taxable turnover exceeds 375,000 AED over any 12-month period. Voluntary registration is available from 187,500 AED. Below 187,500 AED, registration is not permitted. Consult a licensed UAE tax advisor for your specific situation.
What VAT rate applies to gaming time in the UAE?
The standard VAT rate is 5%. Gaming time, bar sales, and multipass subscriptions all fall under the standard 5% rate unless your business holds a specific exempt or zero-rated status (certain free zone activities, for example).
How do I configure IZI to export VAT reports?
In IZI go to Settings → Finance → Taxes. Enter your TRN (Tax Registration Number) and the 5% VAT rate. IZI will then include a VAT breakdown on every receipt and generate a VAT report ready for FTA filing.
What is UAE Corporate Tax and when did it start?
Corporate Tax at 9% on annual profit above 375,000 AED took effect on 1 June 2023. Profits up to 375,000 AED are taxed at 0%. Qualifying Free Zone Persons may retain a 0% rate on qualifying income — but revenue from UAE residents typically does not qualify. Verify with a tax advisor.
When does a VAT obligation arise for a prepaid balance top-up?
Under UAE VAT rules, the tax point is the earlier of invoice issuance or receipt of payment. A customer topping up their balance counts as receipt of payment, so a VAT event is triggered at that moment — not when the time is consumed.
Can I issue a Tax Invoice from IZI to a corporate client?
Yes. IZI can generate a Tax Invoice that includes your club's TRN and, if the client supplies it, their TRN. This is required for B2B clients who need to reclaim input VAT.
What are the FTA penalties for late VAT registration or late filing?
Late VAT registration: 20,000 AED. Late VAT Return: 1,000 AED for the first offence, 2,000 AED for subsequent offences. Errors in the declaration: 50% of the unpaid tax. The penalties are disproportionately large, so timely registration matters.
Do free zone gaming clubs pay Corporate Tax?
All legal entities operating in the UAE must register for Corporate Tax. Free zone companies may qualify for a 0% rate as Qualifying Free Zone Persons, but only on qualifying income — revenue from serving UAE residents on the mainland generally does not qualify. Get specific legal advice.
